Chapter 1
The Image of the Lost Soul
A small, sweet-voiced bird seeks shelter on a cathedral roof but is rejected by the other birds. It finds refuge in the arms of a carved stone figure of a lost soul, which gradually softens in expression. The bird is captured by lodge-folk and caged, singing hopelessly until it dies of cold. That night, the stone figure falls and is shattered, and the pigeons anticipate a more pleasant replacement.
Chapter 2
Dogged
Artemus Gibbon, a timid and respectable young man, is coerced into buying a rakish fox terrier named Beelzebub at a church bazaar. The dog's depraved influence gradually dismantles Gibbon's placid life, leading him into bohemian rooms, dissolute habits, and a compromising encounter with a birdlike lady whose ostrich-feather boa Beelzebub destroys. Gibbon's moral decline is sealed when his former protégé Hilary Helforlether catches him in a compromising moment, and Gibbon admits he now belongs body and soul to the dog.
Chapter 3
The Blood-Feud of Toad-Water
The Cricks and Saunderses, the only two families in the isolated hamlet of Toad-Water, fall into a bitter feud after a hen from the Crick household scratches up Mrs. Saunders's onion bed. The quarrel escalates through mutual insults, dredged-up family scandals, and a failed reconciliation at a Revival Tea, persisting for years despite deaths and the passage of time.
Chapter 4
New Wine in Old Bottles
A satirical dialogue between two working-class women, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Hooper, who attempt to display their intellectual pretensions by peppering their speech with mispronounced references to history, literature, and archaeology, revealing the absurdity of social climbing through cultural affectation.
Chapter 5
Reginald
The narrator persuades Reginald to attend the McKillops' garden-party against his will, hoping to curry favor with the hostess for a Persian kitten. Once there, Reginald's irreverent behavior—mocking Colonel Mendoza's age, teaching a boy about absinthe, and discussing Zaza with the Archdeacon's wife—causes social chaos, leading to the narrator's vow never to take him to another garden-party.
