The Stampeding of Lady Bastable explained

Mrs.

What happens

Mrs. Sangrail negotiates with Lady Bastable to extend Clovis's stay for six days while she visits the MacGregors, using a bridge debt as leverage. Clovis, displeased with the arrangement, orchestrates a false alarm of a peasant uprising (jacquerie) by bursting into the kitchen and leading the servants in a panicked charge into the morning-room, causing Lady Bastable to flee through a French window. The incident leaves everyone embarrassed, but Lady Bastable returns the bridge debt cheque to Mrs. Sangrail at lunch.
