Lettice is one of the Misses Tremarten visiting Lochiel, and her unexplained departure with Captain McCormack triggers the story's central crisis. Her eccentric upbringing, blamed by Aunt Rosamond for her indiscretions, leaves her naive about social consequences and dangerously trusting of the wrong people. The frantic cover-up her aunts attempt — excusing all three sisters from dinner to hide the absence — shows how much Lettice's choices threaten the family's respectability, and sets the mystery of her fate in motion.
