Lettice Tremarten

Lettice is one of the Misses Tremarten visiting Lochiel, and her unexplained departure with Captain McCormack triggers the story's central crisis. Lord Hardcastle

Hardcastle has lost Amy, the woman he loved, and now devotes himself to her devastated father, Mr. Warden, whose health is failing. He wrestles with the responsibility of dragging an old, ill man abroad on an uncertain search, reasoning that action may save Warden where brooding would kill him. At Charing Cross he glimpses a cloaked woman whose strange, rhythmic walk arrests him — a moment that quietly signals the mystery still threading through the story.

Mr. Warden

Mr. Warden sits beside his ailing wife as a thunderstorm rages, listening as she insists their dark days are ending and that Amy will come home. His choked silence and the howling of the hound Presto betray a grief too deep for words, even as he prepares to leave High Elms for a journey abroad with Lord Hardcastle. His broken health and desolate home make him both the emotional center of the family's tragedy and the reason Hardcastle undertakes the search.

Frank Varley

Frank lies in Dublin, saved from fever but sunk in blank despair over Amy, whom he had hoped to marry. His mother, Mrs. Varley, gently confronts his selfishness, pointing out that Mary Burton has worn herself out caring for him while he offers only coldness and ingratitude. His refusal to imagine loving anyone again — and his mother's plea that he simply say 'Don't leave us, Mary' — sets up the quiet emotional counterweight to the novel's darker mystery.

Captain Ivie McCormack

Captain McCormack spirits Lettice away to Ingleside, and it is his man Ellis who coolly informs the Tremarten household of the outing before escaping back to his master. His sister Lilla, described as fast and strong-minded, is suspected by Aunt Rosamond of orchestrating the whole 'freak.' McCormack never appears to explain himself, and the ease with which he vanishes — leaving others to manage the fallout — marks him as the story's most suspect figure.

Amy Warden

Amy is the beloved daughter of Mr. Warden and the woman Lord Hardcastle loved, recovered from the reeds with a look of agony on her face and a wedding band where an antique ruby ring once sat. Her death shatters her father and lover, and the mystery of that ring — and of the ordeal that left lines on her brow — drives the men who survive her. She is buried under a simple cross reading only 'Aimée,' while her mother receives a grand granite monument, a disparity that quietly signals how much about Amy's final months remains hidden.
