Chapter 1
Disappeared from Her Home
The chapter opens with the Warden family in deep distress following Amy's mysterious disappearance. Mr. Warden is consumed by grief and guilt, while Lord Hardcastle begins to notice discrepancies within the family that hint at hidden secrets. The search for Amy intensifies, with Frank Varley joining forces with Lord Hardcastle, and the community of Harleyford is shaken by the event.
Chapter 2
I
Professor Thurstane, a scholar forced into the role of country gentleman, is interrupted repeatedly while trying to work. His cousin Lavinia reports that Nellie is skating after dark, and his nephew Piers announces he is leaving after Nellie's ambiguous response to his marriage proposal. Nellie then announces the arrival of cousins Beatrix and Guy Harley, who have come to stay, much to the Professor's dismay.
Chapter 3

Nellie expresses her dislike of the newly arrived cousin Beatrix to her maid Mattie, while Beatrix boldly interrupts the Professor's work to persuade him to join them for dinner, ultimately succeeding.
Chapter 4
III
On the last day of the old year, Nellie is in a bad temper due to Beatrix's influence on Piers and the Professor. Beatrix, seeing the state of affairs between Piers and Nellie, advises Piers to flirt with her to make Nellie jealous. She also suggests the Professor marry Cousin Lavinia. To orchestrate a midnight meeting, Beatrix prints notes saying 'At twelve tonight' and slips them under the doors of Cousin Lavinia, Piers, and the Professor. Each interprets the note as a romantic invitation from their respective love interests. At midnight, Piers and Nellie meet in the hall, while Cousin Lavinia appears in an old ball gown and the Professor in a ragged cap, leading to a comedic confrontation. Beatrix watches from a corner, and a mysterious figure also appears.
Chapter 5
IV
Lord Hardcastle becomes a daily visitor at High Elms, offering companionship to the grieving Warden family. A smallpox epidemic strikes Harleyford, and both Mr. and Mrs. Warden fall ill. Lucy Williams, a maid, mysteriously disappears, leaving her room in disarray with burned letters and abandoned clothes. Lord Hardcastle investigates, deduces she fled in Miss Warden's clothing, and sends a note to Frank Varley, who is tracking her. The chapter ends with Hardcastle preparing detailed notes for Varley, suspecting Lucy may be ill and heading to London.
