What happens

Leithen, having gathered evidence against Lumley, sends Chapman with a statement to Scotland Yard, but Chapman is attacked and the letter stolen. Realizing Lumley now knows the extent of his knowledge, Leithen attempts to deliver a copy to Felix at the Embassy. After a tense car chase and a dangerous encounter, he reaches the Embassy safely, where he arranges for Macgillivray to receive the evidence and sends a telegram to Lumley proposing a meeting.
