The story begins with Leithen learning from his friend Tommy Deloraine that Charles Pitt-Heron has vanished after becoming involved with a mysterious circle and a laboratory. Investigating, Leithen discovers connections between Pitt-Heron, a German spy case, and the enigmatic Mr. Andrew Lumley, a reclusive collector who secretly runs a criminal organization called the Powerhouse. Leithen finds a draft letter from Pitt-Heron revealing he fled in mortal fear. As Leithen follows the trail, he is intimidated by Lumley but resolves to fight back, recruiting Labour MP Chapman as an ally. After a trap at a restaurant leads to a violent struggle, Leithen gathers evidence and confronts Lumley, offering him a chance to escape England in exchange for burying Pitt-Heron's past. Lumley dies suddenly, and the public mythologizes him as a philanthropist. Leithen orchestrates Pitt-Heron's return by having news of Lumley's death telegraphed abroad, allowing the fugitive to come home safely.
