Dedication

Chapter 4
I: Beginning of the Wild-Goose Chase
Leithen recounts how Tommy Deloraine, frustrated with parliamentary life, announces a mysterious journey. Tommy reveals that Charles Pitt-Heron has vanished after becoming involved with a strange circle of foreigners and a laboratory. Tommy obtains a clue from a Russian embassy clerk suggesting Pitt-Heron may have gone to Moscow, and he decides to follow. Leithen, initially skeptical, grows uneasy after visiting Mrs. Pitt-Heron and sensing deeper trouble.

I First Hear of Mr. Andrew Lumley
The narrator, while investigating the disappearance of Charles Pitt-Heron, stumbles upon connections between Pitt-Heron, a German spy case, and the mysterious Mr. Andrew Lumley. Through a conversation with art critic Jenkinson, he learns that Lumley is a reclusive collector who stores treasures at White Lodge in Blackheath—a house belonging to Mr. Julius Pavia. The narrator pieces together that Lumley and Pavia are linked, and suspects they may be the same person, deepening his intrigue.
