Carson Drew maintains a social position that brings judges and detectives to his table, and Nancy has absorbed case talk since childhood. He treats her as a partner rather than a child, inviting her to stay and hear Mrs. Willoughby's plea and later offering to take charge when the case stalls. His warning that unscrupulous persons may covet the Crandall jewels plants the suspicion that drives the early investigation.
