Chapter 1
A Chance Meeting
Nancy Drew stops at Lilac Inn for lunch and unexpectedly meets her friend Emily Crandall. Over lunch, Emily reveals she will soon inherit the valuable Crandall family jewels and invites Nancy to see them. Nancy learns that her housekeeper Hannah Gruen must leave suddenly, and her father informs her that Judge Graham is coming for the weekend, forcing Nancy to find a new housekeeper quickly.
Chapter 2
Rising to an Occasion
Nancy Drew returns home from Lilac Inn to find that Hannah Gruen has left suddenly to care for her sick sister. With her father expecting a visit from Judge Graham, Nancy must quickly find a new housekeeper. She contacts an employment agency and is sent a disheveled woman with no references, whom she dismisses. After securing a promise of a better candidate for the next morning, Nancy reflects on her household responsibilities and her growing interest in detective work, while also learning about Emily Crandall's inheritance of the famous Crandall diamonds.
Chapter 3
A Queer Girl
Nancy Drew struggles to find a suitable housekeeper before Judge Graham's visit. She interviews Mary Mason, who has excellent references but a suspicious and defiant demeanor. When Nancy reveals her identity and that her father is a lawyer specializing in criminal cases, Mary becomes frightened and abruptly refuses the position, fleeing the house.
Chapter 4
About the Crandall Jewels
Nancy Drew, after a discouraging search, hires Mrs. Sadie Carter as a housekeeper, then visits Emily Crandall to see the famous Crandall jewels. Emily reveals the jewels are still with Mrs. Willoughby, who is retrieving them from a safety deposit box, and that she is engaged to Dick Farnham. Nancy worries about the jewels' safety but tries not to borrow trouble.
Chapter 5
At Lilac Inn
Nancy Drew drives back toward River Heights, uneasy about the Crandall jewels. Meanwhile, at Lilac Inn, Mrs. Jane Willoughby and Mrs. Clara Potter arrive with a handbag full of valuable jewelry. Their nervous behavior attracts attention, and during a distraction caused by a car crash, the handbag is stolen.
