Book Summary
When the valuable Crandall family jewels are stolen from Lilac Inn, teenage detective Nancy Drew takes on the case to help her friend Emily. Through clever investigation and daring risks, Nancy uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving deception and theft, ultimately recovering the jewels and bringing the culprits to justice.
Nancy Drew stops at Lilac Inn for lunch and meets her friend Emily Crandall, who is about to inherit the famous Crandall jewels. After returning home, Nancy must quickly find a new housekeeper when her beloved Hannah Gruen leaves suddenly. She hires Mrs. Sadie Carter and visits Emily to see the jewels, but they are still with Mrs. Willoughby, who is retrieving them from a safety deposit box. At the inn, Mrs. Willoughby and Mrs. Clara Potter arrive with the jewels, but during a distraction caused by a car crash, the handbag containing $40,000 worth of jewelry is stolen. Rumors circulate that Mrs. Willoughby may be responsible due to her financial troubles, but Nancy's father takes the case. Nancy takes over the investigation, interviewing witnesses and following leads. She encounters Mary Mason, a suspicious girl who previously applied for a housekeeping job, and tracks her to Dockville. There, Nancy hides in a storeroom and overhears Mary, her brother Bud, and Tom Tozzle confess to the theft. Nancy is captured and taken by motorboat during a storm, but after a collision with a yacht, she is rescued just in time. The criminals are apprehended, and Nancy discovers the jewels hidden in a secret compartment on the boat. At a celebratory party at Lilac Inn, Emily rewards Nancy with a precious bracelet from the Crandall collection.

Nancy Drew
Nancy moves between her father's law office, the fading elegance of Lilac Inn, and the lake road with a roadster and a mind that won't let go of a puzzle. She is confident to the point of stubbornness, and when her father gently suggests a case may never be solved, she thrusts her chin up and refuses to admit defeat. Her early suspicion of Mary Mason shows both her instinct for a clue and her honest worry about accusing the innocent, making her the restless center of the book's widening mystery.
Mrs. Jane Willoughby
Mrs. Willoughby occupies an uncomfortable position as the guardian of Emily Crandall and the keeper of Lilac Inn, where the theft occurred under her watch. She weeps convincingly, protests her unjust treatment, and admits she cannot afford a large fee, yet Nancy studies her closely, unsure whether she is an excellent actress or genuinely distraught. Her visit pulls the Drews into the case and keeps the question of her guilt or victimhood humming beneath every early clue.
Mary Mason
Mary Mason comes from a family with no money, yet a delivery man reports she is paying cash for finery and refusing the job Helen Corning suggested at Lilac Inn. She once seemed earnest when asking the Drews for work, but she flinched at the mention of Nancy's father, a criminal lawyer, and that memory nags at Nancy now. Her unexplained windfall and her absence from the inn's staff list make her a tantalizing false lead—or something more—in the book's middle chapters.
Emily Crandall
Emily Crandall is the ward whose inheritance of the Crandall jewels should mark a happy turning point, especially after a childhood short on pretty things. Instead, the diamonds vanish and she is left heartbroken and, according to Mrs. Willoughby, facing destitution. Nancy's loyalty to Emily—and Emily's refusal to accuse her guardian—gives the investigation its emotional stakes and keeps Nancy probing even when the clues refuse to line up.
Carson Drew
Carson Drew maintains a social position that brings judges and detectives to his table, and Nancy has absorbed case talk since childhood. He treats her as a partner rather than a child, inviting her to stay and hear Mrs. Willoughby's plea and later offering to take charge when the case stalls. His warning that unscrupulous persons may covet the Crandall jewels plants the suspicion that drives the early investigation.
Bud Mason
Bud Mason hovers at the edge of the case as the brother of the girl Nancy cannot stop wondering about, a figure whose movements and motives she has yet to pin down. His relationship to Mary complicates Nancy's theory that the sudden cash and fine clothes point to guilt, forcing her to weigh family loyalty against evidence. He matters because he embodies the tangle of false leads Nancy must sort through before the real pattern emerges.
Justice and Detective Work
The central theme of the book is Nancy Drew's systematic investigation to solve the theft of the Crandall jewels, using clues, interviews, and deductive reasoning to clear the innocent and identify the true criminals.
Social Class and Wealth
The story contrasts the comfortable lives of the wealthy characters like Nancy and Emily with the poverty of Dockville, highlighting how sudden wealth or the desire for it drives characters like Mary Mason to crime.
Deception and Appearances
Many characters are not what they seem: Mary Mason appears to be a poor job-seeker but is a thief, while Mrs. Willoughby's nervous behavior makes her appear guilty despite her innocence.
Loyalty and Friendship
Nancy's loyalty to her friend Emily Crandall motivates her to solve the mystery, and Emily's trust in her guardian Mrs. Willoughby is a key emotional element of the plot.
