Chapter 1
The Alchemist
The narrator, the last Comte of his line, learns of a family curse pronounced by Charles Le Sorcier after his father Michel Mauvais was killed by the narrator's ancestor. The curse ensures that no noble of the line survives past the age of thirty-two. As the narrator approaches his own thirty-second year, he explores the old castle and encounters a mysterious stranger who reveals himself to be Charles Le Sorcier, kept alive for centuries by the Elixir of Eternal Life. In a final confrontation, the narrator kills the alchemist, ending the curse.
Chapter 2
A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson
The narrator, Humphry Littlewit, reveals that he is actually 228 years old, having been born in 1690. He recounts his long association with the literary figures of the 18th century, focusing on his friendship with Dr. Samuel Johnson. He describes their first meeting in 1763, their membership in The Literary Club, and various anecdotes involving Johnson, Boswell, Goldsmith, and others. The chapter is a nostalgic, rambling recollection of a bygone era.
Chapter 3
Beyond the Wall of Sleep
An intern at a state psychopathic institution in the winter of 1900–01 becomes fascinated by the case of Joe Slater, a degenerate Catskill mountaineer who experiences vivid, cosmic dreams during his prolonged sleeps. Slater's dreams, described in his crude patois, reveal a glorious realm of light and a luminous enemy. The intern uses a telepathic device to connect with Slater's dream consciousness, witnessing a magnificent ethereal world and communicating with a 'brother of light.' As Slater dies, the entity speaks through him, explaining that Slater was an unfit vessel for a cosmic soul, which is now freed to pursue its eternal enemy.
Chapter 4
Dagon
A morphine-addicted narrator, adrift after escaping a German sea-raider during World War I, awakens on a vast expanse of black slime—the risen ocean floor. He discovers a colossal monolith covered in alien hieroglyphs and bas-reliefs depicting grotesque fish-like beings. After witnessing a monstrous creature emerge from the water to worship the monolith, he descends into madness. Now haunted by visions of the deep, he prepares to take his own life.
Chapter 5
The White Ship
Basil Elton, keeper of the North Point lighthouse, recounts his mystical journey aboard the White Ship guided by a bearded man. They visit the Land of Zar (dreams and forgotten beauty), pass Thalarion (the forbidden city of wonders), flee Xura (the land of unattained pleasures), and dwell blissfully in Sona-Nyl (the Land of Fancy). Driven by a yearning for the legendary Cathuria, they leave Sona-Nyl only to encounter a monstrous cataract; the ship is destroyed, and Elton awakens back at the lighthouse to find a dead azure bird and a shattered spar, after which the ocean and the White Ship never return.
