As the narrator approaches his own thirty-second year, he explores the old castle and encounters a mysterious stranger who reveals himself to be Charles Le Sorcier, kept alive for centuries by the Elixir of Eternal Life. In a final confrontation, the narrator kills the alchemist, ending the curse.
