After a devastating thunderstorm and a squatter massacre, he and two companions, George Bennett and William Tobey, venture to the deserted Martense mansion to confront the demon. They set a vigil in the room of Jan Martense, but the narrator falls into a strange drowsiness. Awakened by horrific shrieks and a lightning flash, he sees a monstrous shadow on the chimney—not of his companion—and finds himself alone, his companions vanished forever.
