Chapter 1
To My Father
The speaker dedicates the second volume of his verse to his father, expressing gratitude for his father's care and influence. He reflects on how his childhood reverence for his father evolved into a mature understanding of his humanity, which in turn shaped his perception of God as having a great human heart.
Chapter 2
A Hidden Life
A dying man reflects on his life, his love for a woman he once saw, and his faith in God. He writes a letter expressing his spiritual struggles and acceptance of death, finding peace in divine will. The chapter also recounts his youth, his awakening to beauty and knowledge through a maiden's influence, and his pursuit of learning under a master's guidance, culminating in his college education.
Chapter 3
The Homeless Ghost
A man walking home at midnight sees a solitary, ghostly woman at a window. Later, the ghost appears in his room, pleading for help. He initially recoils in fear, then tries to warm her, but she explains she is too cold to feel fire. She asks him to save her, but he hesitates, and she vanishes. Tormented by guilt, he seeks her in graveyards and churches, but she never returns. He eventually forgets her for a false love, but her memory haunts him until he wastes away and becomes a ghost himself.
Chapter 4
Abu Midjan
Abu Midjan, a warrior and wine-lover, is imprisoned by his chief Saad for drinking wine against the Prophet's command. While in chains, he sings praises of wine and battle. When a battle erupts, Saad's wife frees him to fight. He proves instrumental in the victory, riding Saad's horse and wearing his armor. After the battle, he returns to his chains. Saad, realizing the mysterious warrior was Abu Midjan, forgives him and releases him. Abu Midjan then vows to drink no more.
Chapter 5
An Old Story
A poetic retelling of the Nativity, describing the eternal Son leaving heaven to be born as a child on earth, the adoration of shepherds and Magi, and the cosmic joy of salvation arriving through a newborn king.
