Concepts
Ideas that structure Memoirs of Arsène Lupin by Maurice Leblanc — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Love and Obsession
The narrative explores love as a destructive, possessive force, particularly through Ralph's obsessive pursuit of Josephine Balsamo and her jealous, vengeful love for him, which drives much of the plot's conflict and violence.
Deception and Identity
Characters constantly adopt false names, masks, and secret identities (Ralph d'Andresy/Arsène Lupin, Josephine Balsamo/Cagliostro), highlighting the theme of hidden selves and the performance of identity in pursuit of power and survival.
Crime and Morality
The book blurs moral lines, as the protagonist engages in theft and burglary while rejecting murder, and the antagonists commit cold-blooded killings for treasure, raising questions about justified crime and ethical boundaries.
Power and Manipulation
Characters vie for control through manipulation, secret societies, and psychological domination, with figures like Beaumagnan and Josephine using fear, charisma, and cunning to bend others to their will.
The Supernatural and Rationality
Josephine's alleged clairvoyance and agelessness are treated with skepticism by Ralph, yet believed by others, creating a tension between rational explanation and the allure of the supernatural in the pursuit of hidden knowledge.
Revenge and Retribution
The plot is driven by cycles of vengeance, from the attempted murder of Josephine to her later acts of retaliation against her enemies, including the abduction of Ralph's son, showing revenge as a relentless, generational force.
Treasure and Greed
The hidden treasure of precious stones serves as the central MacGuffin, driving characters to murder, betrayal, and obsession, illustrating how greed corrupts and consumes all who seek it.
