Beaumagnan accuses her of multiple murders and attempted poisoning, but Josephine defends herself, pointing to a miniature portrait that suggests she has lived for over eighty years. Despite her calm demeanor, the conspirators sentence her to death by drowning, and she is bound to a stretcher with a heavy boulder attached.
Chapter 5
The Sinking Boat
Godfrey d'Etigues and Oscar de Bennetot prepare to execute a plan to drown Josephine Balsamo, but Ralph d'Andresy secretly intervenes, rescuing her from the sinking boat. After bringing her to a barn, Ralph declares his love and devotion, but when he wakes, Josephine has vanished, leaving a photograph with a note warning him not to seek her again.
