In this prequel to the Arsène Lupin series, the young master thief, under the alias Ralph d'Andresy, becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy involving a secret society, a hidden treasure, and the enigmatic, ageless Countess of Cagliostro. His obsessive love for the countess leads him through a web of deception, murder, and psychological warfare, ultimately forcing him to choose between his criminal nature and his humanity.
The story follows Ralph d'Andresy, the young Arsène Lupin, as he infiltrates the château of La Haie d'Etigues and uncovers a plot by Beaumagnan and Baron Godfrey d'Etigues to murder the mysterious Josephine Balsamo, the Countess of Cagliostro. Ralph rescues Josephine and falls into an obsessive love with her, but soon discovers she is the leader of a band of thieves and a ruthless manipulator. Their relationship deteriorates as Ralph learns of her involvement in murders and a conspiracy to seize a legendary treasure. After a series of betrayals, imprisonments, and confrontations, Ralph breaks free from Josephine's influence, rescues Clarice d'Etigues, and uses part of the treasure to erase his identity as Arsène Lupin. He marries Clarice, while Josephine escapes, and the full truth of the conspiracy remains hidden from the public.
