    A Farewell to Arms

    The novel follows Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver serving in the Italian army during World War I, through his experiences of war, love, and loss. He meets and falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a British nurse, and after being wounded, he is treated in a Milan hospital where their relationship deepens. Catherine becomes pregnant, and Frederic returns to the front, only to participate in the disastrous retreat from Caporetto. During the retreat, he is arrested by battle police but escapes and reunites with Catherine in Stresa. They flee to Switzerland, where they enjoy a brief idyllic life. Catherine dies in childbirth, leaving Frederic alone.
