Ideas that structure What Is Property? by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Property as Theft
The central thesis of the book, arguing that property (as distinct from possession) is fundamentally robbery, as it allows the idle to extract value from the labor of others and violates natural equality.
Equality and Justice
A recurring theme that true justice requires equality of conditions, and that property creates unjust inequality by privileging some over others through occupation, labor, or law.
Labor and Exploitation
Explores how labor is the source of all value, yet property enables the exploitation of workers by allowing proprietors to claim the fruits of others' labor without contributing equally.
Critique of Law and Government
Argues that civil law and government are tools that sanctify property and oppression, rather than protect natural rights, and that true society requires the abolition of man's rule over man.
Sociability and Community
Contrasts human sociability—based on justice, equity, and mutual aid—with the isolating and anti-social effects of property, advocating for association based on equality.
Possession vs. Property
Distinguishes between legitimate individual possession (use-based, temporary, and equal) and illegitimate property (exclusive, permanent, and exploitative), proposing possession as the basis for a just society.
Inequality of Wealth
Critiques how property inevitably leads to vast disparities in wealth and power, arguing that neither occupation, labor, nor talent justifies such inequality.
Revolution and Reform
Presents the critique of property as a necessary precursor to a fundamental social revolution, urging a transformation of law, economy, and institutions to achieve equality.
