Concepts
Ideas that structure Uneasy Money by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Money and Social Class
The book explores the tension between inherited aristocratic status and the need for earned wealth, as Lord Dawlish's noble title comes with little money, while American millionaires like Dudley Pickering wield power through their fortunes.
Love vs. Infatuation
Bill's relationship with Claire is portrayed as an infatuation based on beauty and pity, while his growing bond with Elizabeth represents genuine love rooted in mutual respect, honesty, and shared values.
The American Dream and Enterprise
Bill's journey to America to make his own fortune contrasts the old-world reliance on inheritance with the American ideal of self-made success through hard work and initiative.
Honesty and Deception
Characters frequently conceal their true identities and motives—Bill hides his title, Claire hides her engagement—leading to complications that test the value of truthfulness in relationships.
Gender Roles and Independence
Elizabeth Boyd embodies a capable, independent woman who runs a bee farm and makes her own decisions, challenging the era's expectations of female dependence on men for financial security.
Noblesse Oblige and Moral Duty
The concept of aristocratic responsibility is both mocked and upheld, as Bill's sense of honor initially prevents him from pursuing wealth, but later guides his choices about love and integrity.
Appearance vs. Reality
Characters are frequently misjudged based on outward appearances—Bill's generous nature is mistaken for weakness, and Claire's charm hides her mercenary motives—highlighting the gap between surface and substance.
