Inspector Armadale is the working policeman on the Ravensthorpe case, summoned to Sir Clinton's room and driven up in the Chief Constable's car. He is competent but impatient, pressing Cecil Chacewater for answers and finding himself outmanoeuvred by a witness who knows exactly how far he can be pushed. Sir Clinton's silent disapproval of his methods becomes a running tension, and Armadale's missteps measure the gap between routine police work and the Chief Constable's colder logic.
