Lord Nelson

Nelson appears through Spanish eyes as the enemy genius who reads the allied line, sees its weakness, and cuts it in two — a maneuver the narrator's informants describe with reluctant awe even as they curse him. He is the tactical intelligence against which the Spanish captains' courage is measured and found insufficient, since bravery alone could not undo his plan. His presence in the narrative gives the battle its shape and gives the Spanish defeat its bitter logic: they were outfought by a mind, not merely by guns.
