Chapter 1
I
The narrator recounts his impoverished childhood in Cádiz, his mother's love and death, his abusive uncle, his life as a street urchin, and his rescue by Don Alonso Gutierrez de Cisniega and his wife, who take him into their home and employ him as a page.
Chapter 2
II
Don Alonso declares his intention to join the fleet, sparking a heated argument with his wife Doña Francisca, who vehemently opposes his plan due to his age and past injuries. The narrator Gabriel is called in and asked about his courage. Marcial, overhearing the dispute, enters the room to join the conversation.
Chapter 3
III
This chapter introduces Don Alonso Gutierrez de Cisniega, a retired naval officer from an old Vejer family, who served in numerous historic engagements from Havana to Cape St. Vincent. His wife, Doña Francisca, bitterly opposes his naval past and his renewed enthusiasm for joining the combined fleet against the English. Their daughter Rosita is mentioned. The chapter also introduces Marcial, a maimed veteran boatswain who, like Don Alonso, is stirred by the prospect of a decisive battle. Together they plan to secretly depart for Cádiz to join the fleet.

Doña Francisca argues against Don Alonso's plan to join the fleet, blaming Godoy for Spain's troubles. Don Alonso and Marcial secretly plan an imaginary naval battle, using maps and animated gestures. Marcial recounts the disastrous friendly fire incident between the San Hermenegildo and another Spanish ship, and the loss of his leg during the capture of four frigates from Rio de la Plata.

V
The narrator reveals that Doña Francisca's strongest objection to Don Alonso joining the fleet is the impending marriage of their daughter Rosita to a young officer named Malespina, set for the end of October. He then recounts his childhood memories of Rosita—her beauty, their games, her singing, and his adoration—and describes how her transition to womanhood and the arrival of her suitor Malespina changed their relationship, leaving him feeling scorned and humiliated.
