Toad's pride and recklessness
Toad’s motorcar mania and courtroom boasts drive disasters until friends restrain him — pride must be humbled before he earns Toad Hall back.
Toad inherits wealth and impulse. He ignores Rat and Mole’s warnings, crashes cars, insults judges, and escapes prison dressed as washerwoman — comic escalation with real cost. Pride and humility theme runs through car theft songs and later tearful apology. Grahame satirizes Edwardian motor fad while loving Toad’s exuberance.
Badger’s stern lecture and riverbank siege plan convert energy to service. Toad’s final banquet speech almost backslides — friends correct him. Freedom versus responsibility appears as Toad learns he is not the only actor in the world. Link wild wood fear chapters to humbled Toad who listens.
