Scudder explains he has faked his own death to evade the conspirators and seeks Hannay's help.

    The Milkman Sets Out on His Travels

    Hannay resolves to carry on Scudder's mission after discovering his body. He disguises himself as a milkman to evade both the police and Scudder's enemies, then flees London by train to Galloway, Scotland, where he plans to hide until he can contact the government.

  5. Chapter 5

    The Adventure of the Literary Innkeeper

    Hannay travels north by train, studying Scudder's coded notebook and evading police. He stops at a remote moorland inn, where he observes the arrival of both police and a second, more dangerous group. He escapes by stealing their car.
