The Thirty-Nine Steps

A bored colonial, Richard Hannay, stumbles into a deadly conspiracy to assassinate a foreign leader and steal British naval secrets. Pursued across Scotland and England by both police and enemy agents, he must use disguise and wits to survive and thwart the plot.

Richard Hannay, a mining engineer bored with London life, returns to his flat to find a mysterious man named Scudder, who claims to have uncovered a conspiracy by the 'Black Stone' gang to assassinate the Greek Premier Karolides and trigger a war between Russia and Germany. After Scudder is murdered, Hannay takes up his mission, disguising himself as a milkman to flee London for the Scottish moors. He deciphers Scudder's coded notebook, learning the plot involves stealing British naval secrets on June 15th. Hannay evades pursuers by adopting various identities—a roadman, a political candidate, and a chauffeur—while surviving harsh conditions. He eventually contacts Sir Walter Bullivant, a government official, but the Black Stone gang infiltrates a secret meeting. Hannay recalls Scudder's mention of 'thirty-nine steps' and high tide, leading them to a coastal house in Bradgate. There, he confronts the enemy agents, who are captured, and the conspiracy is foiled, saving Britain from war.
