Concepts
Ideas that structure The Theory of the Leisure Class by Thorstein Veblen — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Conspicuous Consumption
The book argues that the wealthy engage in wasteful and ostentatious spending on goods, services, and leisure not for utility, but as a primary means of signaling social status and achieving reputability through invidious comparison.
Pecuniary Emulation
Veblen identifies the drive to emulate the consumption patterns and lifestyle of those in higher social classes as a fundamental motive for economic behavior, shaping standards of living and driving acquisition beyond subsistence needs.
Leisure Class and Exploit
The leisure class is defined by its exemption from productive industrial labor, instead engaging in 'honorable' but non-industrial occupations like warfare, government, sports, and religious observance, which are rooted in predatory exploit rather than workmanship.
Invidious Comparison
Social standing and self-worth are established through a constant process of invidious comparison, where individuals judge themselves and others based on relative wealth, consumption, and freedom from productive work, reinforcing class distinctions.
Conspicuous Leisure
The book details how abstention from productive labor itself becomes a mark of honor and social superiority, with visible idleness, the cultivation of manners, and the pursuit of non-utilitarian knowledge serving as evidence of wealth and status.
Vicarious Leisure and Consumption
Veblen describes how the leisure class delegates the performance of leisure and consumption to dependents, such as wives and servants, whose conspicuous idleness and expenditure serve to enhance the master's prestige and honor.
Institutional Conservatism
The leisure class acts as a conservative force in society, as its sheltered position from economic pressures allows archaic habits of thought, predatory traits, and outdated institutions to persist, retarding social and industrial adaptation.
Predatory vs. Peaceable Temperament
The book contrasts a predatory temperament (associated with war, sports, and the leisure class) with a peaceable, industrious temperament (associated with productive labor), arguing that the leisure-class culture selectively favors and preserves the former.
