Albert-next-door is the neighbour the Bastables alternately torment and include, most memorably when he is buried in a garden hole and hauled out dusty, mouldy, and crying. His uncle, who claims to know everything about buried treasure, turns up to rescue him and promptly finds two half-crowns in the same hole, which the children split seven ways, counting Albert as one of themselves. His uneasy place at the edge of the family circle gives the treasure hunts a comic, sometimes guilty, social texture.
