II: Digging for Treasure
The Bastable children decide to dig for treasure in their garden, inspired by adventure books. After initial failures, they recruit Albert-next-door and dig a tunnel, which collapses and buries Albert. His uncle rescues him, and they discover a half-crown coin, which they share among the group.
Chapter 5
Being Detectives
The Bastable children, inspired by detective stories, decide to become detectives. Alice reveals she saw a light in the supposedly empty house next door. They spy on the house and discover it is not burglars or coiners, but the grown-up daughters of the neighbor secretly staying there to save money.
