Rejection of Materialism
Doctor Dolittle repeatedly prioritizes the well-being of his animal friends over financial gain, selling his possessions and living in poverty rather than abandoning his pets, and later refusing to sell the pushmi-pullyu for profit.
Communication and Understanding
The Doctor's ability to learn animal language breaks down barriers between species, highlighting the importance of listening and understanding others, whether they are animals or people, to foster cooperation and empathy.
Adventure and Exploration

Friendship and Loyalty
The strong bonds between Doctor Dolittle and his animal companions are central, as they work together to overcome obstacles, support each other in times of need, and remain loyal through hardships and adventures.
Critique of Human Arrogance
Through characters like Polynesia the parrot, the book criticizes human self-importance and the notion of 'dumb animals,' showing that animals have complex languages and intelligence that humans often fail to recognize.
Compassion and Healing
Doctor Dolittle's role as an animal doctor underscores the theme of compassion, as he uses his medical knowledge and kindness to heal sick and injured creatures, regardless of their species or the personal cost.
Freedom vs. Captivity
The book contrasts the freedom of animals in their natural habitats with captivity in circuses or cages, as seen when the Doctor refuses to cage the pushmi-pullyu and rescues animals from oppressive situations.
