First appearance: The Barbary Dragon
As a supporting figure in The Story of Doctor Dolittle, Ben Ali is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The pirate leader who threatens the Doctor and is forced to become a birdseed farmer.
Ben Ali rules the waters the Doctor's voyage must cross, a pirate whose reputation alone is enough to make sailors change course. He is the story's blunt instrument of menace — greedy, quick to violence, and utterly unimpressed by a country doctor with a shipload of talking animals. His presence turns Dolittle's journey from a whimsical errand into a genuine test of nerve, forcing the Doctor to rely on his wits and his animal crew rather than any authority.
