Scruff Mackenzie — called Moose-Killer, the Wolf, the Son of the Wolf — is a white hunter who has decided his empty lodge needs a woman, and he wants Thling-Tinneh's daughter. He pleads his suit with the eloquence of a man who has absorbed the Raven myth into his own courtship, laying presents at the chief's feet while the young men of the camp mutter in sullen groups.
