Chapter 1
The White Silence
Mason, Malemute Kid, and Ruth struggle through a grueling two-hundred-mile trail with starving dogs and dwindling supplies. After Mason is fatally injured, Malemute Kid faces the agonizing decision to end his suffering, ultimately shooting him and sending his body into a tree cache before fleeing with Ruth.
Chapter 2
The Son of the Wolf
Scruff Mackenzie, a seasoned frontiersman, is struck by a yearning for a wife. Rather than undertake a long journey south, he decides to take a wife from the Upper Tanana Sticks tribe. He arrives at their camp, presents gifts to Chief Thling-Tinneh, and holds a potlatch. The tribe's young men, led by the Fox and the Bear, protest the 'Wolves' (white men) taking their women. The Bear challenges Mackenzie to a knife fight for Zarinska, the chief's daughter. During the fight, the Shaman attempts to shoot Mackenzie with an arrow, but Zarinska warns him. Mackenzie dodges, the arrow kills the Bear, and Mackenzie kills the Shaman by throwing his knife. He then intimidates the Fox and wins Zarinska.
Chapter 3
The Men of Forty-Mile
A quarrel between Bettles and Lon McFane over a perceived insult escalates into a duel, but Malemute Kid intervenes with a clever scheme: the survivor will be hanged. The bluff works, and the duel is called off. Meanwhile, a rabid dog, Yellow Fang, terrorizes the camp, adding chaos to the tense standoff.
Chapter 4
In a Far Country
Carter Weatherbee and Percy Cuthfert, two men ill-suited for the harsh realities of the North, join an ill-fated expedition to the Klondike. Abandoned by their party, they endure a brutal winter in isolation, descending into paranoia, madness, and mutual destruction. The chapter explores the psychological toll of the Arctic and the failure to adapt to its demands.
Chapter 5
To the Man on Trail
On a bitterly cold Christmas night, Malemute Kid hosts a gathering of rough Northland adventurers at his cabin. As they drink his potent punch and share tales, a stranger arrives—Jack Westondale, a man on the run after taking forty thousand dollars from the man who swindled his partner. The group learns his story and, despite the ethics of the North, chooses to help him escape. Soon after, a young Mounted Policeman arrives in pursuit, but the men, led by Malemute Kid's subtle defiance, delay and mislead him, allowing Westondale a head start. The chapter closes with the group toasting 'the man on trail' and justifying their actions by the harsh code of the trail.
