André is a young foundling of good feeling and courage, handy enough with his fists to earn the admiration of the agent he knocks down and the friendship of the great detective Lecoq. Lecoq warns him that Mascarin's gang wants his life and assigns the disguised Palot to guard him, while André himself is left to wonder whether a foundling might still be the scion of some noble house. His loyalty and his ignorance of his own origins make him both a target and a thread the plotters cannot afford to lose.
