Chapter 1
Part I: Caught in the Net

Chapter 2
Putting on the Screw
Paul Violaine returns to his attic in the Hotel de Perou after a failed day of seeking employment, revealing his destitution to his companion Rose. Their desperate financial situation is laid bare as they quarrel over what to do. Their neighbor, Daddy Tantaine, overhears their argument and enters their room, offering unexpected assistance. He gives Paul a card with the name 'Mascarin' and promises to help him find work. After Tantaine leaves, Paul and Rose celebrate their newfound hope, while Tantaine pays his rent to Madame Loupins, flashes banknotes, and then visits the grocer Melusin, revealing a more assertive side to his character.
Chapter 3
A Registry Office
Paul Violaine visits M. Mascarin's registry office in Rue Montorgeuil, sent by Daddy Tantaine. He observes the office and its partner Beaumarchef, then meets Mascarin, who questions him about his past, revealing detailed knowledge of Paul's birth, upbringing, and the annuity his mother received. Paul is unsettled by Mascarin's omniscience but feels trust in his patriarchal manner.
Chapter 4
The Opinion of Dr. Hortebise
Mascarin and Dr. Hortebise discuss their scheme involving Paul Violaine, weighing his suitability and potential risks such as Rose Pigoreau's attachment and the mysterious protector. They also consider the Marquis de Croisenois's demands for Sabine de Mussidan's hand, and receive reports on Caroline Schimmel and a beautiful girl installed in the Rue Douai.
Chapter 5
A Trustworthy Servant
Mascarin meets with Florestan, a valet in the Count de Mussidan's household, at a tavern run by Father Canon. Through their conversation, Mascarin learns about the Count's violent temper, the strained relationship between the Count and Countess, and the Countess's financial dependence on the Duke de Champdoce. Florestan also reveals that Mademoiselle Sabine has a secret lover, whom he has seen meeting with her in disguise. Meanwhile, Mascarin and Dr. Hortebise plan a coordinated scheme to influence both the Count and Countess regarding Sabine's marriage, with Mascarin intending to break her engagement to M. de Breulh-Faverlay while Hortebise promotes the Marquis de Croisenois to the Countess.
