Summoned by Noorna, he is forced into the shape of an ass despite his anger and resistance.

Karaz is the hidden hand behind Shagpat's protection, a genie who commands Kadza, reads the air for conspiracy, and moves unseen above the roofs of the city. His distinctive flaw is desire: catching sight of Noorna in flight, he nearly drops Kadza from the sky, forgetting everything but her beauty, and must tighten his whole body into knots to recover himself. He matters because he is the counter-force to Shibli's quest — wherever the heroes scheme, his nostril finds the odour of it, and his magic shapes the obstacles of the middle arc.
