Chapter 1
I: Overboard
On a lazy Saturday afternoon in June, Frank and Joe Hardy, along with their friends Biff Hooper and Tony Prito, enjoy a leisurely day on Barmet Bay in their motorboats. They reminisce about their recent success in solving the Shore Road mystery and capturing car thieves. A friendly race ensues among the boats, but the excitement is interrupted when a passenger yacht explodes ahead of them. The boys witness a woman jump overboard in distress and, as the yacht struggles to circle back, they race to rescue her. The chapter ends with the woman disappearing beneath the waves.
Chapter 2
The Rescue
The Hardy boys rescue a woman from drowning after a yacht explosion, only to discover she is on her way to see their father, detective Fenton Hardy.
Chapter 3
Miss Todd
Frank and Joe Hardy rescue a woman who jumped from a yacht after an explosion and bring her to their father, Fenton Hardy. She reveals herself as Miss Evangeline Todd, who has come to hire the detective to find her missing twin brother, Professor Todham Todd, who disappeared four months ago after a train wreck and has been acting strangely ever since.
Chapter 4
Concerning Todham Todd
Miss Todd recovers and stays with the Hardys. Fenton Hardy takes the case and departs for the college town to investigate. The boys learn peculiar identifying details about the missing professor, including his habit of leaving shoelaces untied and his exclamation 'by jing!' Meanwhile, Chet Morton and friends present the Hardy boys with mock medals for rescuing Miss Todd.
Chapter 5
Plans for a Trip
The Hardy boys and their friends plan a motorboat and motorcycle trip to explore caves rumored to hold hidden treasure, while Fenton Hardy returns home after losing track of the missing Professor Todham Todd, sharing new clues about his amnesia and habits.
