On a lazy June afternoon, Frank and Joe Hardy rescue a woman, Miss Evangeline Todd, from a yacht explosion. She hires their detective father to find her missing twin brother, Professor Todham Todd. The boys and their friends—Chet, Biff, and Tony—plan a trip to explore caves rumored to hold treasure. Along the way, they recover Frank's stolen motorcycle from escaped criminal Carl Schaum. At Glencove, they encounter strange lights and gunshots near the caves. During a storm, Joe nearly falls off a cliff but is rescued. They meet Captain Royal, a bizarre man who later threatens them with a shotgun. The boys discover newspaper clippings suggesting Royal might be a fugitive murderer. After a chase, Royal falls off a cliff; Frank heroically saves him from the sea. At the hospital, Miss Todd identifies Royal as her brother Todham Todd, who had amnesia. Todd recovers, and the mystery is solved, with the boys rewarded at a banquet.

Frank Hardy
