Concepts
Ideas that structure The Rights of Man by Thomas Paine — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Natural Rights of Man
Paine argues that all men are born with inherent, inalienable rights such as liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression, which form the foundation of legitimate government.
Popular Sovereignty
The book asserts that the nation is the sole source of political authority, and any government must derive its power from the consent of the governed, rejecting hereditary or monarchical rule.
Critique of Hereditary Government
Paine condemns monarchy and hereditary succession as absurd, tyrannical, and contrary to reason, arguing that they treat people as property and lead to war and oppression.
Representative Government
The text champions a representative system based on election and reason, where government is a delegation of power for the common benefit, in contrast to the old system of hereditary privilege.
Society vs. Government
Paine distinguishes between natural society, which fosters cooperation and happiness, and artificial government, which often imposes burdens; he argues that minimal government is needed when society is well-ordered.
Revolution and Reform
The book presents the American and French Revolutions as a regeneration of mankind, advocating for the right of each generation to reform or replace its government according to its needs.
Peace and Anti-War
Paine links hereditary monarchy and court governments to perpetual war and high taxes, proposing that republican principles and international cooperation can abolish war and reduce public burdens.
Economic Justice
The text critiques how old governments drain national wealth through war and taxation, causing poverty, and argues that just government should reduce taxes and promote general happiness.
