Ideas that structure The Princess and Curdie by George MacDonald — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Perception vs. Reality
The book explores how people see only what they expect or fear, as when Curdie doubts the princess's grandmother because he cannot see her, or when the townspeople misjudge the old woman as a witch. True understanding requires looking beyond appearances and trusting inner truth.
Growth and Maturity
Curdie's journey from a skeptical, practical miner to a discerning, faithful servant illustrates that growing up means keeping the child's wonder alive while gaining wisdom. The narrative contrasts continuous resurrection with continuous dying, showing that true maturity invol…
Good vs. Evil
The story presents a clear moral struggle between the honest, loving characters (Curdie, Irene, the old princess) and the corrupt, selfish ones (the doctor, the servants, the greedy king). Evil is shown as deceptive and self-serving, while good is marked by sacrifice, courage,…
Faith and Trust
Curdie must learn to trust the princess's grandmother and the guidance she gives, even when he cannot see or understand her fully. The book emphasizes that faith involves acting on what one believes, not on what one can prove, and that trust in the unseen is essential for doin…
Corruption of Power
The king's court and the city of Gwyntystorm become corrupt when self-interest and greed replace loyalty and service. The doctor, the butler, and the magistrate abuse their positions for personal gain, and the final king's obsession with mining gold leads to the city's destruc…
Sacrifice and Service
Curdie leaves his family and risks his life to serve the king and princess, and Irene stays awake night after night to care for her father. The book praises those who put others before themselves, showing that true nobility comes from humble, loving service rather than rank or…
The Natural World and the Divine
Mountains, mines, and the elements are portrayed as both beautiful and terrible, reflecting a deeper spiritual reality. The old princess's connection to fire, roses, and pigeons suggests that the divine is woven into nature, and that understanding the earth's depths helps one…
Community vs. Individualism
Gwyntystorm's decline is linked to its citizens' self-centeredness, as they boast of their superiority and neglect the common good. In contrast, the miners' cooperative life and the loyalty of Curdie's family show the strength found in mutual care and shared purpose.
