Concepts
Ideas that structure The Place Called Dagon by Herbert Gorman — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Repressed Paganism and Witchcraft
The book explores how ancient pagan rituals and witchcraft, brought by Salem witch descendants, persist secretly in a New England community, surfacing through dark ceremonies and supernatural beliefs.
Isolation and Community Secrecy
The town of Marlborough is isolated and its inhabitants are taciturn, hiding a collective secret that manifests in their reticence and the mysterious, forbidden Westcott farm.
Madness and Fanaticism
Characters like Jeffrey Westcott exhibit fanatical devotion to dark forces, using hypnotic control and psychological manipulation to drive others into trance-like states of madness.
Supernatural and the Occult
The narrative is steeped in occult elements—black books, devil stones, goat's heads, and invocations of demons like Asmodeus—blurring the line between reality and supernatural horror.
Inherited Guilt and Ancestral Curse
The descendants of Salem witches carry an inherited curse, with ancient pacts and buried bones binding them to dark rituals that resurface across generations.
Rationality vs Superstition
Doctor Dreeme represents scientific rationality and skepticism, clashing with the superstitious, irrational beliefs that grip the community and drive its secret practices.
Violence and Sacrifice
The plot involves murder, ritual sacrifice, and brutal acts (like pegs driven into eye-sockets), showing how the cult's practices lead to physical and psychological violence.
Love and Rescue
Dreeme's love for Deborah motivates his quest to save her from being sacrificed, providing a counterpoint to the dark themes and driving the narrative toward a climactic rescue.
Decay and Deterioration
The setting—crumbling houses, burned mills, and a decaying landscape—mirrors the moral and spiritual decay of the community, reinforcing a sense of doom and decline.
