Dreeme and Walden Slater flee through Briony Wood carrying the rescued Deborah, with the Westcott farmhouse burning behind them. Dreeme reflects on Slater's quiet determination and the justice that must be done against Jeffrey Westcott, while the moonlit journey transforms his fear into resolve.

As the Westcott farmhouse burns, Dreeme and Walden Slater observe the fire. Corey approaches Dreeme and speaks of a great madness followed by a great sanity, claiming the valley is cleansed and asking for silence. A man appears in an upper window of the burning house and falls back into the flames. Mrs. Slater and Lucinda are present, and Lucinda takes the unconscious Deborah to Humphrey Lathrop's house. Dreeme and Slater watch the fire consume the house.
