Raoul moves through the Opera's polite society as a man of name and means, but his real business is Christine: tracking her through managers, landladies, and locked dressing-room doors. What he hears at Perros and behind that door convinces him her mysterious mentor is no angel but a scheming man, and his love sharpens into suspicion. His rational, protective streak makes him the reader's stand-in for disbelief — and the story's most persistent pursuer of the truth.
