Spiritual Consolation
Through the dream vision, the narrator moves from despair to acceptance, learning that his daughter is in a state of heavenly bliss and that his grief must be tempered by faith in God's will.
Divine Grace and Mercy
The poem emphasizes that salvation is not earned through deeds alone but granted through God's abundant grace, as illustrated by the parable of the vineyard where all workers receive the same wage.
Innocence and Purity
The pearl maiden's sinless life and her status as a bride of the Lamb highlight the theme that the innocent and pure, particularly children, are granted special access to the kingdom of heaven.
Heavenly Kingdom and Eternal Bliss
The vision of the New Jerusalem, with its radiant streets, pearl gates, and the Lamb at its center, depicts the ultimate reward of the faithful and the joy of eternal communion with God.
Human Limitation and Submission
The narrator's repeated attempts to understand or cross the river are thwarted, underscoring the theme that humans must accept their earthly limits and submit to God's sovereign will rather than strive for what is beyond them.
Wealth and Spiritual Treasure
The pearl serves as a dual symbol: initially representing earthly loss, it is redefined as the 'pearl of great price'—the kingdom of heaven—which surpasses all material riches and is available to all who seek it.
Social Hierarchy and Equality
The maiden's status as a queen in heaven, despite her youth, challenges earthly notions of rank, while the vineyard parable and the description of the heavenly court emphasize that all the saved are equal in God's grace.
