Chapter 1
The Pearl
The poem opens with the narrator, a jeweler, mourning the loss of his precious pearl, which has slipped through the grass and vanished. His grief is profound, and he describes the pearl as a source of great joy and comfort, now lost to him. He lies in a garden, his sorrow overwhelming him, and his mind begins to wander into a dream-like state as he contemplates the nature of his loss and the beauty of the place where it occurred.
Chapter 2
I
The narrator mourns the loss of a precious pearl, which has fallen from his arbour and been lost. He reflects on the spot where it fell, now overgrown with flowers and spices, and eventually falls asleep there, entering a dream.
Chapter 3
II
The dreamer describes his vision of a beautiful earthly paradise, with crystal cliffs, radiant woods, and a glorious river, which he explores in a state of wonder and joy.
Chapter 4
III
The Dreamer continues his journey through the paradise landscape, drawn by the beauty of the land and the river. He spots a maiden on the far shore, whom he recognizes, and is struck with wonder and joy.
Chapter 5
IV
The dreamer, struck with fear and awe, stands still as the Pearl Maiden approaches. She is adorned in white linen and pearls, wearing a crown of pearls, and her beauty is described in detail. She greets him courteously, and the dreamer is filled with joy and wonder.
