The Necromancers · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure The Necromancers by Robert Hugh Benson — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Grief and Loss
The narrative centers on Laurie's profound grief over the death of Amy, which drives him to seek supernatural contact and leaves him emotionally vulnerable to manipulation.
Spiritualism vs. Christianity
The book contrasts Spiritualist practices and beliefs with orthodox Christian (particularly Catholic) teachings, presenting them as competing frameworks for understanding the afterlife and the soul's fate.
Danger of the Occult
The narrative warns that engaging in séances and mediumship opens individuals to demonic influence or possession, portraying such practices as spiritually and psychologically destructive.
Class and Snobbery
Social hierarchies are evident in Mrs. Baxter's disdain for Amy's grocer background and Baptist faith, and in the characters' preoccupations with propriety and social standing.
Faith and Doubt
Laurie's journey from Catholic convert to Spiritualist inquirer illustrates a crisis of faith, where sensory evidence and personal experience challenge doctrinal belief and create inner conflict.
Love and Sacrifice
Maggie's courageous and selfless determination to save Laurie from obsession and possession demonstrates love as an active, protective force that requires personal risk and endurance.
The Nature of Evil
The book explores evil as a real, personal, and malevolent force—whether through demonic spirits or the corrupting influence of the occult—that seeks to exploit human weakness and destroy souls.
Psychological vs. Supernatural
The narrative repeatedly questions whether Laurie's experiences are the result of mental breakdown, fraud, or genuine supernatural phenomena, leaving the boundary between the two deliberately ambiguous.
Female Agency and Strength
Maggie emerges as the central heroic figure, using her composure, intelligence, and spiritual conviction to confront evil, while other women like Mrs. Stapleton and Lady Laura are portrayed as misguided or superficial.
