Chapter 1
Billy Byrne
Billy Byrne, a product of Chicago's rough West Side, grows up in a gang of pickpockets and thieves, learning to fight and survive. Chapter 2
Shanghaied
Billy Byrne, having been shanghaied onto the Halfmoon, endures brutal beatings and starvation from the captain and mate as they attempt to enforce discipline. Despite his initial violent resistance, Billy gradually adapts to ship life, finding a strange comfort among the rough crew. His hatred for the ship's passenger, a well-dressed gentleman, grows, and he overhears a suspicious conversation between the passenger and the captain, hinting at a secret mission as the ship arrives in Honolulu.
Chapter 3
III: The Conspiracy
The chapter details the conspiracy to kidnap Barbara Harding, orchestrated by Larry Divine, Skipper Simms, and the officers of the Halfmoon. Second Officer Theriere, posing as Count de Cadenet, ingratiates himself with the Harding family in Honolulu, while secretly planning the abduction. Billy Byrne, overhearing the plot, is recruited by Theriere into a separate scheme to cut out Divine and Ward for a larger share of the ransom.
Chapter 4
IV: Piracy
The Halfmoon crew, under Skipper Simms and with Theriere's scheme, approaches the yacht Lotus under the guise of a distressed vessel carrying dynamite. Despite Captain Norris's suspicions, Anthony Harding orders them aboard. Once on deck, the pirates reveal their true intent, overpowering the crew. Billy Byrne brutally defeats Billy Mallory in a fight, and Barbara Harding is captured and roughly handled by Byrne. Theriere's plan to win Barbara's favor is thwarted by Ward's actions, leading to violence and the seizure of the yacht.
Chapter 5
Larry Divine Unmasked
Barbara Harding confronts the truth about Larry Divine's complicity in her kidnapping after Theriere helps her overhear a conversation revealing Divine's true role. She grapples with her feelings of betrayal and the memory of Billy Mallory's sacrifice.
