Billy Byrne, a product of Chicago's violent slums, is shanghaied onto the Halfmoon, a ship crewed by pirates plotting to kidnap heiress Barbara Harding. After the ship wrecks on a Pacific island, Billy saves the life of his enemy, Second Officer Theriere, sparking an unlikely friendship. When Barbara is captured by headhunters, Billy and Theriere rescue her, but Theriere is killed. Billy then follows Barbara to Mexico, where he becomes a bandit captain under General Pesita, robbing a bank to clear the name of a friend. Barbara, believing him a criminal, struggles with her feelings. Billy rescues her from kidnappers, professes his love, and is ultimately pardoned for a crime he didn't commit. He returns to defend the Harding ranch, killing the villainous Grayson and proving his worth. The novel traces Billy's journey from a brutish thug to a man of honor, driven by love and a desire for redemption.
