Concepts
Ideas that structure The Mother by Pearl S. Buck — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Motherhood and Sacrifice
The book centers on the mother's relentless labor, emotional suffering, and self-denial for her children, from feeding the family to enduring physical pain and moral compromise, yet her love is often met with ingratitude or tragedy.
Poverty and Survival
The family's constant struggle with scarcity—fuel, food, money—shapes every decision, forcing the mother into desperate acts like lying about her absent husband and sending her blind daughter away to reduce the burden.
Sin and Retribution
The mother's adulterous affair and subsequent pregnancy are framed as a sin she believes brings divine punishment, manifesting in her daughter's blindness, her son's barren wife, and her own physical decline.
Gender Roles and Patriarchy
Women are defined by their reproductive and domestic roles—bearing children, serving men, and enduring hardship silently—while men hold authority, gamble, and abandon responsibilities, yet the mother's inner life and desires are vividly portrayed.
Family Conflict and Favoritism
The mother's open preference for her younger, charming son over the hardworking elder son breeds deep resentment, leading to quarrels, hatred, and a fractured household that mirrors broader social tensions.
Desire and Repression
The mother's powerful sexual and emotional desires, awakened by the landlord's agent, conflict with her duty as a widow and mother, leading to secret encounters, shame, and a lifelong struggle to suppress her own needs.
Blindness and Disability
The daughter's blindness symbolizes vulnerability and social burden; she is seen as useless, pitied, and ultimately married off to a harsh fate, reflecting how disability compounds poverty and gender oppression.
Isolation and Loneliness
Despite being surrounded by family, the mother experiences profound loneliness—abandoned by her husband, estranged from her elder son, and haunted by her secrets, she finds solace only in memories and her younger son's fleeting visits.
